What We Owe the Next Generation

"Leave things better than you found them" is easy to say and considerably harder to practice consistently, especially when the benefits of doing so mostly accrue to people who are not yet born and cannot thank you for it.

Every generation inherits both gifts and burdens from the one before it — infrastructure and institutions built by people who will never see how they turn out, alongside problems deferred by people who decided someone else would eventually deal with them.

The question worth sitting with is which category our own choices fall into. Are we building things — skills, institutions, habits, resources — that make the path easier for whoever comes after us? Or are we, understandably but unhelpfully, simply passing our own unresolved problems further down the line?

This is not a call for grand, sweeping gestures. Most meaningful generational contributions are unglamorous: mentoring someone patiently, building something durable rather than merely impressive, telling the truth about hard lessons instead of only the polished version.

None of us will be around to see the full outcome of what we choose to build or neglect today. That, perhaps, is precisely the point — the next generation deserves our best effort regardless of whether we are here to witness what it becomes.
