Fashion Forward: Ankara Reimagined
Ankara has always been a canvas for creativity, but a new wave of Nigerian designers is pushing the fabric into territory their grandmothers might not immediately recognize — structured blazers, minimalist silhouettes, and pieces designed for the office as much as the owambe.
"We grew up seeing Ankara as occasion wear," says one Lagos-based designer whose line has gained a following among young professionals. "I wanted to prove it could be part of someone's everyday wardrobe, not just something you save for a wedding."
The shift reflects a broader trend: young Nigerians increasingly want clothing that feels rooted in identity without sacrificing versatility. Ankara blazers paired with plain trousers, or wrap skirts styled with simple tops, have become a common sight in Lagos co-working spaces.
It is a quiet but meaningful evolution — proof that tradition and modern life are not opposites, just waiting for someone creative enough to stitch them together.
